Wise Fools Pub

Truth. Justice. Rock and Roll.

8pm, Monday, June 14, 2004: Our band of rock and roll crusaders were summoned to the pub of the Wise Fools. Our mission: to save the world from the doldrums of humdrum lives by rocking on the unconventional Monday night.

We secretly conferred, assessing the situation and the means with which we were to rock. We knew that first the shadows of the night needed to be made safe by Brian Sharpe, aka Batman.

8:45pm: With a tool belt full of toys, the Dark Knight knocked off the foes of peace by mesmerizing the crowd, first with an onslaught of distortion and echo, then with a soaring rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Somehow, he channeled the powers of Superman and Wonder Woman and knocked the audience with the one-two punch of “Do Me Right” and “Have Mercy on My Soul.” Even the toughest of criminals, the Talkies, were subdued by his steam-from-the-manhole-cover-underneath-a-pale-moon tones.

9:45pm: Once the shadows were made safe, we turned the power over to Wonder Woman. With a flip of her hair, she left her alter-ego MK Gallina behind and wrapped the listeners with her lasso, making them tell only the truth… and the truth soared out of their mouths in the form of cheers and praise for their liberation from lackluster days. She wooed with a new song called “Fingers and Toes” and reminded that she’d be there, forever and a day, “Always”. The whole of the crowd found themselves tied up by Wonder Woman’s glorious powers.

Finally, the brothers Meade emerged from their changing booth, otherwise known as the bathroom, in full Superman glory. Tearing off their everyday looks, it was revealed that Superboy forgot his super-shirt, but Superman had not. With and without uniform, they flew on to the stage, ripping through hits like “Exclusively” and “Say Uncle” with a POW! and a Ka-BAAM!, and then surprising everyone with the secret power of new tunes like “Broken” and covers of “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, packing a walloping Kerr-ANG! No arch-enemies could stop them, except… except for the kryptonite of time, which crept in toward the end of the set and rendered the Supermen powerless and tired.

Thankfully, the combined forces of the Superheroes was enough to save the world from itself. As long as these three superheroes exist, there shall always be Truth. Justice. And Rock and Roll.
